Presenter Bio:

AJ, (aka "Diwata") began his musical career as an award winning classical and jazz pianist, but soon found the virtuoso nature of the musical style created a vast gap between performer and audience. He eventually discovered the potential of simple tribal instruments for closing this gap by creating spontaneous, intuitively accessible sound-scapes. For several years he played ambient "Soundbaths" using the Yidaki (didgeridoo), for relaxation at his Yoga studio in Wellington, NZ, and subsequently at festivals around the country. He later began traveling, performing, recording and producing music, largely based on a mono-tonal drone. This, coupled with his extensive drumming and percussion background, and experience in facilitating drum circles and events, gave birth to "The Evolving Rhythms Tour", a multi-media project which has since performed and evolved at many festivals at home and abroad. Most of the samples used in the music of "The Evolving Rhythms Tour" are recorded on location, and involve groups of people co-creating music, which are later mixed with other recorded samples, from other groups. AJ believes that the fact that the samples work together, despite being recorded away from each other, reveals a deeply intuitive musical commonality that we all can connect with and share. AJ has recently traveled extensively by sail boat through the south-west Pacific, collecting samples of traditional music and dance, which he has woven into his multicultural, multi-media tapestry.
"The Evolving Rhythms Tour" is simply a means of reflecting the art of living in harmony with ourselves, each other, and our environments, which is the key to music, rhythm, and life.
