HIV & AIDS Awareness within Community: Focusing on Balinese Youth & Families
“It could be you, it could be me.”
Background: According to KPA Bali (The Commission of AIDS Prevention of Bali) in 2009, approximately 2900 Balinese people have been infected by HIV or are living with AIDS. Seventy percent of them are male and 30% are female. These numbers are expected to increase in the following years. Over half of the infected Balinese are men and women of reproductive age, between 15 and 29 years old.
Objective: The main objective of BaliSpirit Festival’s outreach program is to raise awareness among Balinese women, youth and their families about the reality of HIV & AIDS and to start honest discussions about the virus and its impact on the community. .
Targeted: Youth, women and their extended families regarding the reality of HIV & AIDS and how it can affect them and, in fact, does affect them. Mostly in three regions of Bali with an increasingly high rate HIV & AIDS: Denpasar (Sanur), Buleleng & Gianyar.
Program Partners: Yayasan KISARA, a not-for-profit organization focusing on youth issues such as drug use, sex education and HIV & AIDS & Yayasan Spirit Paramacitta (Bali Plus).
Focus: To create and manage ‘unique communication program’ to inform, raise awareness and promote understanding of the HIV/AIDS epidemic within local communities.
