-

East West Collaboration with Musicians from Indonesia, India, Algeria, Africa, Australia, USA, Canada, Holland & South America

-

Rare Indigenous Indonesian Dance and Music Performances

According to Rob Weber, one of the Festival co-founders, “Indonesian art and culture has such diversity and richness, yet remains somewhat of  a mystery to the global audience. One of the missions of BaliSpirit Festival is to help increase appreciation of Indonesia’s creative culture by pairing local artists with international peers, creating contemporary works that open doors to new audiences.”

Studio Music Collaboration & Performances

Fostering a Spirit of Respect, Cooperation and Collaboration Among Artists and Musicians

"In 25 years of playing festivals, BaliSpirit Festival is the most unselfish and supportive festival I've ever experienced. Instead of the typical elitism or competitiveness, all the musicians pulled together. I've never experienced that before.“  Richard Hardy of Larisa Stowe and Shakti Tribe, 2009

Led by Festival co-founders Robert Weber & I Made Gunarta through Yayasan Krysta Guna, the BaliSpirit Festival Studio Collaboration Project fosters a spirit of respect, cooperation and collaboration among artists and musicians. Through this project International musicians collaborate with Indonesia’s finest, both in the studio and on the stage, producing multi-media presentations and live concerts.

This year’s Festival presents Ganga Giri of Australia with Bali’s Jegog Semarpagulingan (Bamboo Gamelan and Contemporary Dance Music)

Australian Ganga Giri weds ancient instrumentation with modern production to create tribal dance music at its finest.  Deeply inspired by the sanctity of Australia’s land, he has become an ambassador for his country and gained the respect of Aboriginal Didgeridoo (yidaki) players.

Pak I Nyoman Windha is a leading musician and award-winning contemporary composer of Balinese Gamelan music.  A graduate of the National Institute of Arts  in Denpasar, Bali, Windha has been a member of the faculty since 1985 and travels and teaches extensively around the world.

These two masters will take part in this year’s International Music Collaboration project, fusing the ancient sounds of Australia’s Didgeridoo and Bali’s Jegog (bamboo gamelan) with cutting-edge dance beats and live percussion. This event was made possible by the support of the Australia Indonesia Institute.

In addition, this year we are honoured to have the following artists participate because of their own government’s support.

Samian - French Canadian

An Aboriginal Canadian, Samian spent his first 12 years on a Metis reservation.  He later became interested in poetry and began to write.  Samian won a competition and when it came time to recite his poem, he spontaneously decided to rap instead of reading it. Loco Lacass discovered him and invited him to rap on stage, where Samian had to prove himself on the spot. The rest is history. He is generously funded by the Canadian Government.

Kultiration - Sweden

With grounding messages and music ranging from deep to elevated, from introspective to ecstatic, the band has found a style that is now most easily labeled as simply ‘Kultiration’.  The band’s intensity and presence on stage has earned it a strong reputation as Scandinavia’s leading Reggae band. Kulitration has been generously funded by the Swedish Government.
