Love BaliSpirit – Meet the Masters : Sheena Nancy Sarles, USA
Growing Younger Gracefully is the golden thread through all of Sheena Sarles’ work in yoga, movement, nourishment, counseling and coaching. We’ve all got it in common – age happens! Sheena joins the Festival to assist in turning over the cultural stereotype and making this a positive experience for body, mind and spirit.
Sheena Sarles, A few of her thoughts, here :
Bali Spirit Festival, in a word, is…
Extraordinary!
What brings you back to Bali?
The Festival offers world class teachers of varied and extraordinary modalities, all bringing transformational experiences to a global audience.
How did you find yoga?
I arrived at Yoga and healing through curiosity about positive aging. I was a dancer and knew that for my health, I needed to place less physical stress on my body. My whole life changed as I incorporated a Yogic perspective. Positive aging is the natural fruit of a Yogic approach to body, mind, and sprit.
How did yoga find you?
A highly regarded teacher in Bali told me I had a great potential for bringing the message of elegant and joyful aging to the vast numbers of women who do not feel honored and supported in their aging.
Before yoga I was…
Development Director for a charter school
Has yoga helped you through any tough times in life?
I have been a single mother, unemployed, lost both my parents and faced other obstacles. Yoga has been my teacher, my healer, and my guide.
The greatest gift yoga gave me is that…
I am no longer ‘afraid’ or hiding that I am aging. I approach my aging and the aging of others as a cause of celebration and gratitude. On the mat I inspire others because as a culture, aging is not celebrated, we are encouraged to only ‘be younger’. I am anti anti-aging!
I want to inspire others to…
love their wrinkles! I teach my students to use their bodies, be curious about what feels right, and to practice the most important aspect of aging; a positive attitude.
When I grew up I wanted to be…
a teacher and a movie star.
It’s a secret, but I’d love to…
ride my bike around the world.
If I had a superpower, it would be to …
erase fear and anger, no matter what the situation.
The best remedy for a bad day is….
a yoga class, a long Meditation or a good sit down with the Yoga Sutras.
Every yogi should read…
Red, Hot and Holy by Sera Beak
My favourite yoga quote is…
Curiosity is the key happiness (Pema Chodren)
Without yoga I’d be … …
lost!
