About Asmat Dormoom

Asmat Dormoom is a traditional dance ensemble from the Asmat tribe, originating from Saman Village, Savan District, Asmat Regency, South Papua Province, Indonesia.

Founded in 2010, the group consists of approximately 15 members who are part of the local Indigenous community. For their appearance at the BaliSpirit Festival, 6 members will be performing. The members maintain their daily livelihoods while remaining actively committed to preserving Asmat arts and cultural traditions.

The ensemble includes 10 dancers and 5 musicians. Traditional instruments performed by the group include the tifa drum, bamboo instruments, a large guitar, and a small guitar or ukulele.

Asmat Dormoom regularly performs traditional Asmat dances at cultural exhibitions, customary wedding ceremonies, government invitations, and village ceremonial events. They have also performed outside Papua, including in Solo, Central Java, and Jakarta.

Their repertoire includes dances such as Asterpolis, Aster, Pilikaper, Sajojo, and Yospan, accompanied by songs including Tobelo and Tamang Kung Pisa. Each dance carries its own meaning. For example, Pilikaper reflects the Asmat community’s acceptance of new cultural influences entering their region.

As members of the Indigenous Asmat community, their performances are not merely entertainment but acts of cultural preservation, ancestral respect, and reinforcement of community identity.

The group is led by the Asmat Tribe Leader, Yance Akanmor, who promotes culture & art in metropolitan areas.
