About Jonathan Hardianto

Gregorius Jonathan Hardianto, known as Jo, is a young cultural performer dedicated to preserving and sharing Indonesian traditional arts through dance. At just 14 years old, he is already deeply rooted in the refined tradition of Classical Yogyakarta dance, known for its calm, graceful, and subtle movement quality—often associated with noble characters such as Arjuna, Nakula, and Sadewa, reflecting Jo’s naturally gentle and composed presence on stage.

What makes Jo’s work especially distinctive is his openness as a performer. On stage, he does more than perform—he connects. Whether at community festivals or cultural showcases, he brings sincerity, curiosity, and a deep respect for Indonesia’s artistic roots, blending classical discipline with a fresh, youthful energy that keeps tradition alive for today’s audiences.

Jo began his artistic journey in 2024 after accompanying his younger brother to dance and gamelan rehearsals, an experience that quickly grew into a dedicated path of classical training. He has since learned key Yogyakarta court dance repertoires including Klana Alus Cangklek, Klana Alus Sembung Gilang, Beksan Tayungan, and Bambangan Cakil, where he performs the heroic role of Bambangan (Arjuna).

Beyond dance, Jo also studies Javanese gamelan, playing instruments such as the bonang, saron, and peking, which enriches his understanding of rhythm and traditional performance structure. Despite only a few years of training, he has already appeared on respected cultural stages including Taman Budaya Yogyakarta, Banyumas Ngibing, Festival Bisik Serayu alongside maestro Rianto Lengger, Bundengan showcases in Central Java, and Wayang Orang productions at the Yogyakarta Palace. As part of a growing generation of young artists, Jo helps traditional culture remain vibrant—not as something of the past, but as a living art that continues to breathe and evolve.

His first time at Balispirit Festival, Jonathan will be performing alongside his brother EL NATHAN HARDIANTO.
