Camp Magic Arts
For the past 30 years, Katherine has dedicated her professional life to working with children, women, and families through performance and rhythm. Her Singapore based program Camp Magic was established in June, 2000 – and has been a major holiday hub for children 3 – 12 years ever since. Camp Magic works with story through art, circus, drumming, song, soccer, stilt walking, and authentic cultural craft to name only a few.
Katherine integrated the drum into her performance repertoire the same year Camp Magic began. Since then, She has travelled and worked extensively throughout Asia and other parts of the world as “the drumming storyteller”. On top of using the drum during her shows, Katherine has had the opportunity to lead drum circles and collaborate with fellow drummers John May (Australia), Tarek Sawires (Egypt/Australia) and Rita Superbi (Italy). Her women’s drumming groups have performed at a number of venues, including Wessex Art Walk, the Forum, and theatre shows throughout Singapore. She has engaged audiences at the Esplanade Singapore with interactive drumming, and held many workshops for teenagers in Bali through United World College’s Bali Bridges project.
This will be Camp Magic’s 5th year at The BaliSpirit Festival! This year Katherine will be using her skills as a drum facilitator at two orphanages during the festival’s community outreach, and leading adults in an occasional Balispirit’s daily drum circles.
In addition to that, Katherine will be joining South African flow artists Shaheen and Shouniez van der Schyff (from Fiery Pixies), and young dance artists Billie Phoenix and Mickey Johnson. Together, they will be showcasing an interactive story performance on Children’s day – where audience members are invited into the show arena to participate.
