About Janurangga
I Kadek Janurangga is a Balinese composer and gamelan musician, born in Ubud on January 10, 1999. His relationship with gamelan began at the age of nine—not simply as an introduction to music, but as an early immersion into a living cultural language.
In 2011, he joined Sanggar Nata Swara, a Bali-based arts collective that would become his artistic home. What began as personal fascination gradually evolved into a deeper calling, leading him toward composition as a means to navigate, question, and reimagine sound, tradition, and expression.
He graduated from Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Bali in 2021, where his academic experience intersected with the development of his artistic voice. Moving fluidly between structured learning and intuitive exploration, his work exists at the intersection of tradition and contemporaneity.
Janurangga’s compositions often expand the possibilities of gamelan, both in form and concept. Works such as “Panjang Ilang” for Gambang gamelan, “Lekeh” for Balinese kendang ensemble, “Bukan Aku”—which explores breath as a sonic medium—and “Gamelan & Energy”, integrating gamelan with electronic elements, reflect his ongoing curiosity about sound as both material and experience.
As both composer and performer, he remains actively engaged with Sanggar Nata Swara, where collaboration continues to shape his artistic perspective. The collective serves not only as his foundation, but as an evolving space for dialogue, experimentation, and shared growth.
Currently, Janurangga extends his practice into computer-based and electronic music, expanding his sonic vocabulary beyond traditional frameworks. His continued dedication has brought him to various performance platforms, cultivating a presence that bridges discipline and instinct, heritage and innovation, structure and freedom.
Janurangga will be performing Tritala with Ayu & Putu Septa at our opening celebration on Wednesday 15th of April at approximately 6:30 pm. See you there!
What is Tridatu?
Selected Gamelan Instruments, Electronics, and Dance Bali
Tridatu is a philosophical concept symbolized by the interweaving of three colored threads: red, representing the creator; black, the preserver; and white, the dissolver. It reflects the three fundamental phases in the human cycle of existence: birth, life, and death.
This wisdom is embodied through music and movement, expressing how human beings are inevitably bound within this continuous cycle. Such awareness becomes essential in understanding the deeper meaning of living in this world.
The music emerges from raw, untamed sounds, carefully shaped into a reflection of consciousness, inviting us to contemplate birth, life, and death. The movement, on the other hand, mirrors the dynamics of the human journey, a process of seeking meaning through the ever-shifting flow of existence.
