…is your playlist ruining your mojo?
Sound advice if you’re over-doing your eminem!
“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” – Nikola Tesla
Before Tesla said it Einstein was guessing, and Yoga Masters, musicians and poets knew for sure that the universe is made of song.
Thousands of years after the Himalayan yogis were chanting Om in reverence to the primordial creator, Einstein realised that energy was more ‘real’ than matter, and that everything – including our bodies, thoughts and experiences – is made of waves pulsing at different frequencies, just like music.
We are all, actually, walking tuning forks sending out and seeking for frequencies that resonate with the reality we’re tuned into. It’s as if the entire universe is humming – the big question is, who is calling your tune? Because NOT ALL MUSIC MAKES YOU HAPPY!
Einstein said, “If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. Which is very, very interesting, because when interviewed for this year’s Bali Spirit Festival almost half of all yoga teachers and body workers said if they were given a wish they would ask to be good at music! And there is a revolution happening in the music industry to turn people on to sounds that heal instead of the huge din out there of sounds that actually do us harm.
Hum a little tune and think about that!
Today we can actually see the effects of sound frequencies on the world – blow your mind with this…
We know that water holds memory affected by thought and music, cells emit light that reacts to sound and thoughts, intention, meditation and certain music promotes plant growth, stimulates flowers, relaxes animals, inspires us and takes us to other worlds.
“ I saw God at a Pink Floyd concert once.” David Gibson, sound healer at Bali Spirit Festival
Music is being played to orchards and other plant crops to affect DNA, protein, photosynthesis, increase the sweetness in apples and produce lovelier flowers.
If you want your plants to thrive, play them Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata in rice fields.
If you want to make them suffer, play heavy metal.
And if you want to try the same thing out on yourself try music tuned to screw you up at 440hz by David Helplingand then the same thing with resonant harmonics here.
Devotional chanter at this year’s Festival, Kevin James, had his own personal revolt against bad vibes, and is walking proof of the power of changing your tune. “Music healed me from mild depression, freed me from being totally possessed by ego and helped me open to a life of surrender,” he says.
So, can your playlist change your life? You bet!
Music has a proven effect on healing brain damage, improving memory, increasing intuition, lowering blood pressure, enhancing physical performance, creating flow states, beating addiction and as an anaesthetic during surgery.
And, as corporations, film makers and governments know, music can disturb the brain, cause violence, anger, risk of heart attack, stress, fear, confusion and be used for manipulation.
“People worry about kids playing with guns, and teenagers watching violent videos; we are scared that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands – literally thousands – of songs about broken hearts and rejection and pain and misery and loss.” – Nick Hornby, High Fidelity
It’s weird but true that in 1953 the International Standards Organisation tuned almost all music used in the world to A=440 hertz – a frequency argued to be out of harmony with nature and deliberately used by the Nazi regime to inspire discord, fear and aggression.
“If one should desire to know whether a kingdom is well-governed, if its morals are good or bad, the quality of its music will furnish the answer.” ~ Confucius.
People working consciously with sound for more loving ends are fully aware that part of the revolution we’re all here for starts with shifting our frequencies, our vibration, our internal playlist to one that vibes at a whole other level.
432 Hz is said to be mathematically consistent with the patterns of the universe. Studies show this tuning vibrates with the universe’s golden mean PHI and unifies the properties of light, time, space, matter, gravity and magnetism with biology, the DNA code and consciousness. When our atoms and DNA start to resonate in harmony with the spiraling pattern of nature, our sense of peace, bliss and connection to nature is said to be magnified.
So how do you know if your tunes about been hacked?

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” Plato
This is how it happened to James, “When I first fell in love with mantras I used to chant every morning after yoga. One day I decided to just keep going with the one Buddhist mantra. I watched my mind go through the motions of boredom and unconscious thoughts. Then, all of a sudden it was like a veil lifted. Everything was sparkling and profoundly beautiful. I felt completely connected and beyond time. As I kept singing, I watched an ant trail carrying a horse fly and I began to weep at the profound meaning of life and death reflected as one.”
And this is how it happened to David Gibson; ‘I was in high school listening to music through headphones when I dropped into an ecstatic state of joy and bliss. When I started doing chakra treatments with sound on myself my life changed drastically.”
David, who has become a world-class boffin on the subject of sound healing now, says sound and music “showed me a way of getting to a state of peace and stillness, even in the midst of a conflict. I am much, much healthier because I use sound and music whenever I have anything going on physically or emotionally.”
“Bliss happens when you access higher states of gratitude, love, compassion, joy, a connection to the frequency of your Soul, and ultimately a connection to a place where you are one with everything in the Universe (all frequencies in the Universe at once). By the way, when you are in this last state, your brain is in Theta (4-8 cycles per second), so you can actually use Theta rhythms as a portal to accessing it.”
“I think we’re all born with access to this, but then we have to peel away enough layers of conditioning to let it shine through again.”
This peeling away – or healing – is about editing out the negative crap from your internal playlist. “When you trigger the frequency of an idea, emotion, illness or block with a dissonant sound that aggravates it, it releases its stored energy, which is healing because it allows the body to return to the core frequency of what is true and right and healthy for it. When you turn up the volume on blocks with sound they can explode, releasing stored tension which can be good both physically and emotionally,” says David.
Kevin James says it like this; “Music and chanting is the outcome of surrendering to my heart’s longing for connection with spirit. It has been a way for me to affirm and share my highest aspirations and spiritual journey, beyond the conditioning of my mainstream childhood and culture.”
He says shifting his personal melody and supporting that through music brought his life’s work to his awareness.
The film, What the Bleep, explores this beautifully, and healers from the ancient Amazon to many of those coming to work, play and teach at the Bali Spirit Festival are onto the power of music to heal, create love, stimulate genius and restore the body and emotions to their optimal state.
